This game was played to give James Harper a run before he went to Windsor tomorrow to play in the Australia v England Test Match. His team mates were Jarrod McHardy, Will White and Will Gilmore. The 2 Wills also played before heading to Windsor for The Colts match and Test respectively.

The Finals was between Eynesbury and Garangula. The chukka scores were 1st 3-2 E, 2nd 6-5 E, 3rd 6-5 E, 4th 10-5 E, 5th 6-11 E and the 6th 12-10 Eynesbury.

The first game was between Wastecorp and Thailand. Both teams were very even throughout the game until the last chukka when Thailand completely dominated.

The final score was 14-9 to Thailand. The second game was between Eynesbury and Garangula. If Garangula won this game it meant these 2 teams would play each other in the final on Saturday.

The game played out much the same as the previous one with the scores even at 10 all in the beginning of the 6th and then Garangula attacked the goals and scored twice to take the match 12-10. The finals will be between Eynesbury and Garangula and the subsidiary final will be between Ellerston White and Thailand.

Game 1 was between Thailand and Eynesbury. It was a very even game with the scores at the end of the 1st 2all, 2nd 4-5 Thailand and 3rd 5 all. In the 4th Thailand attacked and Eynesbury could not get a handle on them at all and at the end of the chukka the score was 10-5. The 5th was the same but the attack this time was from Eynesbury and they scored 4 to Thailand’s 1 to take the score to 11-9 Thailand. The 6th was a fast chukka with many attacks on goal but Thailand were not able to score. Eynesbury on the other hand scored 1 and looked like they were going into overtime when a penalty was awarded to them and with the conversion they were the winners 12-11.

Game 2 was between Ellerston, who had to win to stay in the tournament, and Wastecorp. Ellerston went on the attck straight up and scored 2 goal to Wastecorp’s 0. The was the same at the end of the 2nd and it was not till the later half of the 3rd that Wastecorp scored their first and 2nd goals but Ellerston also scored 2 so the half time score was 4-2 Ellerston. Wastecorp came out and scored 2 quick goals to take it to 4 all but another to Ellerston ended the chukka 5-4. After that it was as tho Wastecorp had no reply to the Ellerston attack in the 5th with the white team scoring 5 unanswered goals to end 10-5. Some pride was regained in the 6th for Wastecorp as the got 2 more back but that was close as they could get before the last bell. Ellerston won 10-6.

The 1pm game was between Ellerston White and Thailand. Ellerston were coming off the loss to Garangula in there 1st game so they were out to regain their form. There was only 1 goal scored in the 1st chukka by Ellerston. 1-0. The 2nd had the white team on attack and scoring 3 more goals to Thailand’s 1. 4-1 Z. There was only 1 goal scored again in the 3rd but this 1 was to Thailand. 4-2 Z. After the half time break and team talks the white team were once again on the attack and they scored another 3 unanswered goal to end the 4th 7-2 Z. Thailand hit the field running in the 5th and Ellerston did not see which way they went as they scored 4 goals to Ellerston’s 1. 8-6 Z. The 6th was the last chance for Thailand and they through everything at the opposition to try to get the win but only managed to score 1 more goal and the final score was 8-7 Ellerston.

The 3pm game was between Garangula, who had beaten White their last game, and Wastecorp, who wanted a win after a loss to Eynesbury in their first game. The 1st chukka had a lot of running up and down the field with both teams scoring 1 goal each. The 2nd chukka was the same with 1 goal each scored again. The 3rd was more tactical and as a result 2 goals were scored by Wastecorp and 3 to Garangula. 5-4 Garangula.

Wastecorp had a talk amongst themselves at half time, as Ronnie was not here to tell them were they were going wrong, and it seemed to gee them up as they come out in the 4th and scored 5 goals to Garangula’s 1 to end the chukka 9-6 Wastecorp. The 5th was a stalemate with no goals scored and the 6th there were 2 goals awarded to each team. Final score 11-8 Wastecorp.

INDICATION OF INTEREST IN PLAYING IN THE ROYAL SHOW POLO - 2009. The Sydney Show Polo has been a feature on the Australian Polo Calendar for many years. The event remains the highest in relation to spectators who watch the polo, and the RAS is now consciously looking to build on the opportunity. After the success of last years “State of Origin Show Polo Series”, the RAS is once again looking for polo to play a major part in the arena entertainment at this year’s Royal Easter Show. Details – State of Origin Show Polo Series Competing Teams: To be badged as Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland. Format: Two round games for each team. Two top teams on point’s progress to final. Two bottom teams on points progress to the runners up final. Handicap: The Show Series will cater for teams around the 10-12 goal aggregate

Team Structure: 3 aside. A minimum of 2 players are to be from the State that they are representing. A minimum handicap of 2 goals per player is required. No players under 2 goals will be accepted into the competition. In the current environment it might be necessary to mix the teams so as to minimise the commitment of a player for one or two nights and to give exposure to more players . The organisers reserve the right to waive the State representation structure should this be necessary.

Modified Rules: The games will be 4 chukkas with modified ‘Show Polo” rules. Player Fee’s: Players will be paid $100 per their handicap rating for each game they play. Eg A 4 goal player would be paid $400 per game.Sponsor Rights: The Management reserves the rights to sell the team shirts to a sponsor, and all teams will play under the sponsors brand for their state. Tournament Management Rights: The Tournament Management reserves all rights in relation to the scheduling of matches during the Tournament and acceptance of players and teams The RAS is implementing initiatives which are being put in place – light shows, big screen replays, audio visual packages, electronic player biographies and scoreboards, sponsored teams and an interactive commentary show – all elements making for an exciting spectator sport. The first game of the day pitted Eynesbury against Wastecorp. Eynesbury got away to a flying start and at the start of the 3rd chukka they were up by 4-2. There was only1 goal scored in the 3rd to take the score at the start of the 4th to 5-2. Wastecorp combined to score 2 goals and Eynesbury 1 to start the 5th 6-4.

Wastecorp leveled the score at 6 all in the 5th and both teams scored more goals to start the 6th 8-7. That was the last Wastecorp saw of Eynesbury as they dominated the next 3 lineouts and scored off each one. To be 11-7 up and then they scored again with no answer from The Wastecorp team so the final score was 12-7.

The next game was between Ellerston White and Garangula. Garangula came out strong from start and by the end of the 2nd they were 4-1 up. As the game continued Ellerston got to within 2 goals of Garangula but they could not close this gap.

Jack Archibald marked Glen Gilmore exceedingly well and so Ellerston struggled to go to goal and this resulted in a lot of behinds. Simon Hill was steady at the back and this allowed JP to monopolize the middle and cut off any attack mounted by Ellerston and Guy scored some very good goals up the front. The final score was 12-8 Garangula.

FINALS OF THE KERRY PACKER CHALLENGE CUP

SUBSIDIARY FINAL Wastecorp and Eynesbury both decided to give there 14 goal teams for the next tournament a run in this final. The Eynesbury team was Will and Ed Goold, Ruki Baillieu and Jamie Le Hardy and the Wastecorp team was Mike King, Mark Field, Damien Johnston and Earl Herbert. Over night the heavens had opened and dumped 35mm of rain, along with the 11mm from Friday night, so this game was played on the North Field so as to give the Home Field a bit more time to dry for the final and also so the field would not be chopped up. The end score after the 6 chukkas was 8 all and rather than play an extra chukka Ron Wanless tossed a coin and it was Eynesbury that officially won the Subsidiary Final.

Pitchfork: Umpire Mark Field, Tim Clarke, Rob Archibald, Andrew Hinw and Rick Mitchell.

The crowd then moved their picnics to the home field and watched a fast game of open polo played between Ellerston White and Pitchfork. Pitchfork had to give Ellerston 1 goal start as they were a 13 goal side and that was the score at the end of the 1st chukka with neither team being able to get the ball through the posts. The 2nd chukka had the first goal scored by Pitchfork but they conceded 2 to Ellerston and the score at the end was 3-1 Z.

Ellerston maintained the momentum into the 3rd chukka and the end it was 5-1 Z. The 4th was a stop and start chukka and only 1 goal scored by each team to end 6-2 Z. The 5th saw a few whistles blown and penalties awarded but Pitchfork were having no luck in their penalty hitting with 3 missed opportunities, but not all in this chukka, and the end score was 7-4 Z

The 6th chukka was how, I am sure, the Pitchfork team wished the whole game had been with Rob Archibald and Andrew Hine making several charges at goal and scoring twice but Ellerston was up to the challenge and added 1 goal of there own and on the final bell Ellerston had taken out the 2009 Kerry Packer Challenge Cup 8-6.

What was so special about this win, and I am sure most of the Australian polo community agrees, is that this was won by home grown players on home grown horses. Well done to all concerned. The Champion Pony was awarded to “Crinkle”. She is a 6yo mare who is an embryo foal out of “Crackle” and by “Norman Pentaquad” and she was played by the MVP of the match Mat Grimes. As the presentations were finalized the rain started again and all eyes turned to preparations for the next tournament. Stay tuned for more results. Thanks for reading.

Ellerston started their semi final against Wastecorp in a blaze and it was not until half way through the 2nd chukka that Wastecorp got their first goal. At the end of the 1st chukka it was 3-0 to Z. At the end of the 2nd it was 5-2 Z.

In the 3rd Wastecorp got there momentum going and got the score to 5-4 before Ellerston put there foot to the pedal again and ended the chukka 7-4 Z. In the 4th 2 more unanswered goals were scored. 9-4 Z. In the last 2 chukkas Wastecorp mounted an attack again but Ellerston wore the brunt and came out on top with the final score 13-7

Pitchfork had to give Eynesbury a goal start on handicap and that was the difference, give or take, with Pitchfork leading all the way till the last chukka. At the end of the 1st it was 3-2 P, 2nd 6-4 P, 3rd 8-7 P, 4th 10-9 P.

At the beginning of the 5th was the first time the scores had been even with Earl Herbert scoring from the field to tie the score at 10 all. Eynesbury had seen the light and took the lead after Will Goold hit a goal and not to be out done his brother Ed scored also to take it to 10-12 E. Throughout the 6th Pitchfork ran to goal but could not get the ball through till Rob Archibald scored and then he scored a penalty to even it again at 12 all. From the next lineout Rob scored again and this time Eynesbury had run out of time and Pitchfork won through to the final 13-12.

The 2 games today could have been deciders to see who went onto the semis from Group B. The 1st game was between Eynesbury and Wastecorp.

The 2 teams traded goals through out the game but Wastecorp had more on the board at the end of the 6th and were the winners 12-11. Eynesbury did not seem the same team today as we had seen playing earlier in the tournament.

With Wastecorp winning it meant that the next game between Garangula and Hexham was a dead game. Garangula did win this game 9-6 over Hexham.

The 2nd chukka was even and the score was 4-3 Wastecorp. 2 more goals to Wastecorp and 1 to Garangula bought the score at half time to 6-4 Wastecorp. The scores were even at the end of the 4th at 6 all but only 1 goal was scored by Wastecorp to take them into the lead at the start of the 6th 7-6.

In the 2nd match Hexham made a strong start and were leading 2 nil for a while but Eynesbury score at end the 1st 2-1 Hexham.

From there on it appeared as tho Eynesbury had the upper hand except for a bit of resistance here and there from Hexham. At the end of the 2nd it was 3-2 Eynesbury and 3rd 9-5, 4th 12-5, 5th 15-7 and at the end of the 6th Eynesbury won 15-9.

KERRY PACKER CHALLENGE CUP DAY 3

DAY 3 GAMES
Today’s first game was between Groeninghe and Calatagan. The first chukka had only 1 goal scored by Groeninghe. Calatagan answered in the second and this set the course of the game with Calatagan never being able to take the lead, only tie the game, until the 6th. Groeninghe went into the 6th chukka 2 goals up but Calatagan, with their patron Jake Zobel playing today instead of Will White, put together a blinder and ended up winning the game 11-9. Game 2 had Pitchfork dominating the Ellerston White team, in a game that was not for the faint of heart. Ellerston were leading the game 4-1 at one stage but Pitchfork came back and momentum had swung there way as things were not coming off for Ellerston. Several technical penalties were given against Pitchfork for backchat and severe ride offs. They had a 2 goal lead going into the 6th and at last the Ellerston team put there stuff together and ran out winners 10-8.

KERRY PACKER CHALLENGE CUP

The first game of the day pitted Wastecorp, for the first time without Ron Wanless playing. But he was there to spur his team on and offer advices were he thought it was needed, and Hexham. The first half of the game saw a lot of close plays as tho the teams were checking what they could get away with.

At the half time mark the score was 2-4 to Wastecorp. Wastecorp came out firing in the 4th to take more of a lead and end the chukka 2-6. Hexham came back in the 5th when Greg Keyte came out on Tequila and lead his team to scoring 3 goals but they conceded 2 to finish 5-8. Hexham kept their head of steam to score 2 more goals but could not score the 3rd to take the game to extra time with Wastecorp running out the winners 8-7. DJ played very well for Wastecorp and Greg Keyte was well aided in his attacks by all his team members.

The second game had Garangula playing Eynesbury. Garangula had 2 team changes with young Englishman Edmond Parson taking Guy Schwarzenbach’s place and John Paul Clarkin taking Simon Keyte’s place due to illness and Eynesbury bought in Earl Herbert to take the place of Will Gilmore who had re-broken his finger. The Eynesbury team started the game as they would finish it. Attacking. Ruki was sitting back dictating the play and hitting the big balls up to his cousin Ed Goold and with his fast running horses was unstoppable in scoring.

At the end of the 1st it was 3-1 Eynesbury, 2nd 7-3, 3rd 9-3, 4th 11-5. James Shepherd was trying his hardest to keep Ruki contained and was successful a few times and then Garangula started to smother Ed and Earl Herbert took over the scoring. There was a magnificent goal scored by Will Goold in his first run on an Ellerston field after he hit a back hand from a Garangula clearing shot and it went through. At the end of the 6th it was 14-8 to Eynesbury.

KERRY PACKER CHALLENG CUP DAY 1

On a very overcast autumn day the Kerry Packer Challenge Cup saw its first 2 games played. The 1st was between Groeninghe and Pitchfork. It was a very even game with both teams sharing the lead at various times. At the end of the 3rd chukka it was 4 all and at the end of the 6th it was 8 all and an extra chukka was needed before Andrew Hine took the ball into the attaching zone for his team before Rob Archibald was able to hit the goal to win the game. Pitchfork 9 defeated Groeninghe 8.

Game 2 was between Ellerston White and Calatagan. The play went from 1 end of the field to the other before Ellerston managed to score the first goal of the game with 45 seconds left in chukka 1. The 2nd chukka remained scoreless and it was a penalty in the 3rd that gave Calatagan there first and then another penalty and goal to them also to make it 2-1 then Ellerston scored 2 more and it was 3-2 Ellerston at half time. The white team came on strong but Calatagan kept the pressure on and took the lead in the 6th but Ellerston hit back before the scores were tied again at 6 all and a penalty in the goal mouth to Ellerston in the dying seconds saw them take the match out 7-6. The game was only just over and the heavens opened to drown all and sundry that could not make cover.

San Saba rebounded from last Sunday’s loss in the finals of the Joe Barry Memorial to score an exciting 13-12 victory over a talented EFG Bank team in the opening round of play in the 2009 Ylvisaker Cup at the International Polo Club in Wellington Saturday afternoon. “All I could think of was the number of times we had been ahead by five goals going into the final chukker of play and lost,” said San Saba team captain Tommy Lee Jones. That was not the case this time. After a 1-1 first chukker that had the teams testing one another’s strengths and weaknesses San Saba exploded with five goals in the second chukker. Sapo Caset scored four times and Carlucho Arellano added a single goal. EFG Bank managed a single goal from Carlucho’s older brother, Julio Arellano, as San Saba took a commanding 6-2 lead. EFG Bank tried to fight its way back into it in the third chukker as Julio Arellano converted a penalty shot and scored twice from the field, and cut the San Saba lead to two goals, 7-5, at halftime. Defenses tightened in the fourth period with San Saba getting goals from Carlucho Arellano and Toto Collardin while EFG Bank was held to a single penalty goal from Julio Arellano. San Saba carried a three goal lead into the fifth chukker, 9-6, but EFG Bank wasn’t ready to concede anything. “We each have nine good horses,” said Jones, when asked about the depth of the San Saba stables, “so we felt good about that, but anything can happen in polo.” Attacks were launched and rejected throughout the fifth period with foul shots supplying the only scoring of the chukker. Luis Escobar scored twice for EFG Bank while Caset converted three penalty shots for San Saba. “I was a bit concerned about the final chukker,” said Caset. “We had been leading by a few goals throughout the game,” he said, “and I was afraid that we might lose focus, get a little careless in the final chukker.” Caset had good reason to be concerned. Trailing 12-8, Julio Arellano converted a penalty shot in the opening minute of the final chukker to make it 12-9. Escobar scored from the field to make it 12-10 before Whistle Uys’ second goal of the game made it a one goal game, 12-11. “They took some chances in the final chukker,” said Caset, “I knew they would, and they converted them,” he said. “I was quite concerned.” Carlucho Arellano finally answered with a goal for San Saba as the team struggled for control. Uys scored again for EFG Bank, but it wasn’t enough. The final bell sounded with San Saba on the winning side of a 13-12 game. “We’re concentrating on having a little more fun.” Said Jones after the game, “and it seems to be turning out alright for us.” Caset led all scoring with eight goals. Carlucho Arellano scored four times and Toto Collardin added a goal for the win. Julio Arellano led the EFG Bank team with six goals. Teammates Whistle Uys and Luis scored three goals apiece. A Carlos Gracida-led Patagones team rallied from a 7-6 half time deficit to score a 15-10 win over Audi in the opening round of play in the 2009 Ylvisaker Cup at the International Polo Club.
Julio Gracida scored the first goal of the game for Patagones followed by a goal from Gillian Johnston (substituting for the injured Gonzalo Avendano). Gonzalito Pieres got Audi on the scoreboard with a penalty goal, and with time running out, Juan Bollini tied the score at 2-2. Carlos Gracida put Patagones up 3-2 with a goal in the second chukker, before Audi got on track. Gonzalito Pieres scored three goals and Brandon Phillips added another for a 6-4 advantage. Julio Gracida accounted for the other Patagones goal. “We were having trouble in the throw-ins in the opening chukkers.” said Carlos Gracida, “and they were taking advantage of our mistakes.” Pieres converted another penalty goal in the third chukker before Julio Gracida’s two goals cut the Audi lead to a single goal, 7-6, at the half. Hall of Famer Memo Gracida was on hand to offer the Patagones team some advice at halftime, and a new team took the field for the fourth chukker. Julio Gracida tied it with his fifth goal of the game but Pieres converted a penalty shot to give Audi an 8-7 lead, but Patagones was just warming up. Carlos Gracida added three more goals and Johnston scored her second to take a healthy 11-8 edge. “They (Patagones) played as individuals in the first half,” said Memo Gracida, “but came together as a team in the last three chukkers.” Carlos Gracida was displaying 10-goal form on both offense and defense as he led charges and directed players on the field. Two goals from Audi’s Brandon Phillips were answered by Carlos Gracida who scored once from the field and then converted a penalty shot for another goal. After five chukkers of play, Patagones held on to a 13-10 lead.
Audi continued to press in the final chukker, but the Patagones defense held. “They (Patagones) kept Gonzalito (Pieres) from getting the ball in the second half,” added Memo Gracida, “If he can’t get the ball, he can’t score.” Gonzalito may not have been able to get the ball, but Carlos Gracida certainly did. Charging down the field toward the southern goal, Carlos Gracida executed a neck-shot that carried nearly 70 yards at an extreme angle for a goal. Patagones went up 14-10. A closing goal from Julio Gracida gave Patagones the 15-10 win. “I think it was a great team effort,” said Carlos Avendano, who played a solid back position for Patagones. “I think that the combination of Carlos (Gracida) and I helped set up the rest of the team.” Carlos Gracida led all scoring with seven goals. Teammate and nephew Julio Gracida scored six times and Gillian Johnston added two goals for the win. Gonzalito Pieres scored six goals for Audi. Brandon Phillips added three goals to the pot and Juan Bollini chipped a goal.
ISLA CARROLL 9, LUCCHESE 8
As if it weren’t enough to score all eight of his team’s goals in regulation play, Isla Carroll’s Sugar Erskine converted a penalty shot in sudden-death overtime to capture a 9-8 win at the expense of a beleaguered Lucchese team. Trailing 6-3 at halftime, Lucchese relied on three consecutive penalty goals from 9-goaler Mike Azzaro to tie the game at 6-6 in the fourth chukker. Erskine got the last word in, however, scoring his seventh goal of the game for a 7-6 lead.
Lucchese’s Andres Weisz scored the only goal of the fifth chukker and tied it at 7-7 in the hotly contested match. Azzaro continued to press for Lucchese in the sixth chukker, scoring his sixth goal of the game and giving them a narrow 8-7 lead. Two more missed scoring opportunities by Lucchese were followed by another Erskine goal, evening the score and forcing the overtime period. A ten-minute intermission was followed by furious play by both sides, opportunities gained opportunities lost. Lucchese was whistled for a foul and a penalty shot was awarded to Isla Carroll. Fittingly so, Sugar Erskine converted the shot for the 9-8 win. Erskine scored all nine Isla Carroll goals while Mike Azzaro scored six times for Lucchese. COLDSTREAM CUP vICTORIA

Thanks to Judi once again for her coverage of the Vic tournaments for us. This past weekend saw the Coldstream Cup B Grade played between , Lavazza 2 goals, Hexham 3 goals, AYC 5 goals, Mt Elephant 5 goals, Simpsons Confectionery 3 goals and Coramba Downs 5 goals. The weather closed in and the Sunday Final between AYC and Coramba Downs was abandoned. However today, Wednesday, at 6.30pm the final was played with a strongish wind (not an icy southerly) under a slightly threatening heavy sky with glorious silver lining on the clouds from the setting sun. Coramba Downs: 5 goals, Beau Karolos, Craig Taylor, Lanto Sheridan and Corin Gibbs( patron) AYV: 5 goals Inge Burke, Eric Asker, Sam Gairdner and Arthur Yencken (patron). The game was a bit "push me pull you" to begin with but settled to a really tight contest over the 4 chukkas. Ch.1 The No 3 for Coramba Downs scored a field goal and the No 4 scored from a penalty. The chukka ended 2-0 to CD. Ch2 Inge Burke scored a field goal for AYC and then not to be out done by the lady Arthur Yencken scored to tie the game at the end of the 2nd at 2 all. Ch3, Sam Gairdner scored for AYC and the CD No4 scored off a penalty. 3 all.
The spectacular shot of the match saw Sam Gairdner of AYC stopping a penalty to CD by reaching high overhead, only to be shot down when it went over the backline and a 'force' awarded to CD, however the next penalty shot from their No4 was stopped. Ch4, AYC scored from a field shot by Sam Gairdner bringing the scores level at 4 all. In the last 30 seconds a penalty was awarded by umpire Will Gilmore to AYC but they could not score and the game ended a 4 all draw..

Gonzalito goes under the spotlight in the US.

There were a number of handicap changes made during the annual handicap meeting in Aiken, South Carolina, recently, but none more controversial than that affecting Gonzalito Pieres. Rated at the ultimate 10 goals in both Argentina and the UK, Gonzalito remained at nine goals after the spring handicap meeting held after the Florida high-goal season this spring. However, Gonzalito's ensuing trip to Santa Barbara with the Audi team encouraged USPA officials, once again, to give closer scrutiny to his handicap, after his side swept all before them, winning three major 20-goal tournaments on the West Coast. In the initial handicap vote, according to one insider, the handicap committee voted 11 to 4 to move the talented Argentine to the 10-goal rating once held by his father and currently held by his brother, Facundo. However, the change would have killed off the winter Audi entry, in which Gonzalito plays alongside one-goaler Marc Ganzi and his brothers, Nicholas (6) and Facundo (10). Another vote was taken a few days later and his nine-goal rating was upheld. Hence, the Pieres brothers will be allowed to compete with Audi for the 2009 Florida winter season.
Another regular Audi team member also saw his handicap change: Joseph Stuart went up from three to four goals. Fred Mannix Jr went down from seven to six goals, Jason Crowder and Mariano Uranga both went from six goals to five.
Indicative of renewed interest in arena polo, Shane Rice had his arena handicap raised from six to eight goals and Jason Crowder's arena rating went from six to seven goals.

FINAL OF STELLA ARTOIS MELBOURNE CUP

The final sunday was a glorious sunny day, everything perfect for the Stella Artois Melbourne Cup Polo Final. Marquees large and small were brimming with happy people, looking forward to a great game, good food and wine and they were not disappointed. The subsidiary final for the Sofitel Cup was between Turtle Island v West Side Umpires Greg Keyte and Corrin Gibbs. Chukka 1. This was an open and running chukka with both teams scoring all their goals from the field. The nd score was 3-2 Turtle Island. Chukka 2. A penalty, on the Shadowfax side, was taken by the No2 Turtle Island but it went wide. They got another penalty just after that and it was saved in goal by Westside. They then went on the attack and scored of the mallet of Hoppy at the mansion end. 3 all. Turtle Island replied straight away to be 4-3. Hoppy then took the ball from the throw in and scored before the bell. 4 all. Chukka 3. Simon Walker scored for Turtle Island and Stirling took control and scored also. 6-4 TI. With 24 secs left in the chukka Sam Hopkinson hit a very high shot at goal but it missed. Still 6-4 TI. Chukka 4. Play very messy across goal with all players attacking and defending but Hoppy got stick to ball and scored. 6-5 TI. The teams were very fired up at this point and a penalty 2 went Turtle Island way but was wide. They attacked the goal 3 more times with no joy. They opened the play up with long fast galloping end to end and across goals polo but Sam Hopkinson always seems to be there to deny Turtle Island the goals. Still they attacked and had 2 more goals blocked but went went through. 7-5 TI. Chukka 5. Hoppy came out and scored a quick goal. 7-6 TI. Turtle Island replied just as quickly, then scored a penalty and Stirling also scored from the field to take Turtle Islands lead to 10-6 at chukkas end. Chukka 6. West side scored through James Harper from the field, Hoppy off a penalty and then Harper off a penalty. They had draw closer. 10-9TI. The ball was thrown in on Shadowfax side and it was all a bit frantic untill a 60yd penalty was awarded to Turtle Island. Gillon took the hit and after the 3rd one ho scored the goal. 11-9 TI. Back at the line up at centre field there appeared to be some discussion going on regarding the third hit in the sequence and whether it was a full swing or not. The final bell went and the Sofitel Cup had been won by Turtle Island 11-9 over Westside. The Final was on next between Sandalford v Garangula Chukka 1. The first chukka saw a very fast end to end chukka with the teams sorting each other out. Gilmore scored for Sandalford, Ed and Simon for Garangula and Glen again for sandalford to end the chukka at 2 all. Chukka 2. A penalty resulted in a goal for Garangula and then a field goal from the throw in. 4-2 G. Some fine stick work in a melee by Ed Hitchman saw the ball saved by Sandalford and run the lenght of the field to score the goal by their Ollie Cudmore. 4-3 G. Chukka 3. A huge hit from Tex Webster in first minute resulted in a goal for sandalford to tie the scores at 4 all. There were a lot of penalties awarded and pony changes laking place but the score did not change. 4 all at half time. At divot stomping time there was a "run for the goody bags" in the middle of the field with young healthy people charging madly from all sides. Chukka 4. Simon Keyte scored first for Garangula and immediately an equalizer from Glen Gilmore. Another goal to Simon Keyte and that ended the 4th 6-5 G. Chukka 5. Glen Gilmore was the scorer off a penalty then a hit by Simon Keyte from a penalty kept the 1 goal buffer between the teams. A long fast run the full length of the field by Jack Archibald for Garangula after the first bell gave them a 2 goal lead 8-6at the start of the 6th. Chukka 6. An early whistle in favour of Garangula but Ed Mathies took an 'air swing' then the Sandalford No4 ran the ball to goal and was successful. 8-7 G. Glen was riding Salabre in this chukka and scored twice on her to put Sandalford in front and win the match 9 goals to 8. Everyone agreed it was terrific polo to watch. Both Sandalford and Garangula played fast skillful polo with team work of the highest order. After six full chukkas it came down to the wire, and Jack Archibald was very unlucky right in the goal mouth when his shot just scooted across and narrowly missed scoring just before the bell to tie the game and go into extra time. The Sella Artois Melbourne Cup Trophy for 2008 was presented to the winning team Sandalford and The Gary White Award for the BPP and The Gary White Award for the Best String of Ponies was made by Peter White, the brother of Gary White, who passed away last September. He was a wonderful patron and player here in Victoria and he had won the cup in 1991. It was an emotional moment for everyone. "Salabre" who is owned by Robyn Fitz-Henry and played by Glen Gilmore was Best Playing Pony and Glen also won the Best String of Ponies . He gave the crowd an interesting insight into the history of his involvement with each one of his horses. To top it all off Glen received the MVP award. Not a bad day at the office!!!!! Peter Prendiville, in accepting the trophy, congratulated the VPC on the organisation of the tournament, the spirit in which it was played and thanked his 'whole team' which included everyone helping Sandalford to victory. We would all love to see them come back next season to defend the title .

To days games were played at Eynesbury Polo Club Field 2. There we were in the midst of one of Victoria's most significant Grey Box forests and GREY it was!! A gale was blowing towards the road end and at one stage the goal post blew down and the bucket and balls were off to "'Tassie". By the second match the poor bedraggled goal umpires, timekeeper and scorer were blitzed. Absolutely horrible conditions. Nevertheless it was "press on to the fort" for all concerned. Sandalford v West Side Once again i only arrived in the 3 chukka and the score was Sandalford 3 Westside 4 so here we go. Chukka 4. At the 1.12 mark Glen Glimore set up his No 2 for a Sandalford goal to make it 4 all. Neil Craig rescued the ball out of a 'squabbling pack' and ran to goal, and hit it through to take Westside to the lead again 5-4. Glen Gilmore had his hands full keeping Sam Hopkinson off the ball and finally ran away but without sufficient team back up. as a result Westside scored again to end the chukka 6-4. Chukka 5. Sandalford only took 34 seconds to pull one goal back scored by Glen into the wind. 6-5 WS and then Glen defended a penalty from Hoppy. Sandalford were awarded a penalty and Glen hit another wonderful shot into the gale to score. 6 all. Another penalty to Sandalford from the corner was hit by Glen to Tex and then Ollie gathered it from the melee to score. 7-6 S. Westside scored again to end the 5th at 7 all. Chukka 6. It rook half a chukka of to and froing before Westside before Hoppy put all his mihht behind a penalty shot to hit it through. 8-7 WS. Then 30 seconds later a 30yd penalty to Sandalford and tied again 8 all.
Glen then met a Westside player head on and stole the ball. He and Neil battled all the way down the field before the pass to Tex was put through the posts to see Sandalford defeat Westside 9-8. Garangula v Turtle Island Umpires Glen Gilmore Tex Webster 3rd Man Sam Baillieu. Chukka 1. For the first 3 minutes the two teams were up and down the field several times. At the 3.26 mark a penalty went in favour of Garangula taken by Simon Keyte, He hit it up to his No4 and score. 1-0 G. There was an imediate score to Turtle Islands Stirling. 1 all Then again Turtle Island scored through Simon Walker. 2-1 TI. Chukka 2. Penalties were awarded to either team but they both missed. Then following a long, exceptionally fast run down the field and an exhibition of smooth team work, resulted in a goal. to Garangula. 2 all. Fom the lineout Hamish took the ball and scored. 3-2 TI. Simon Keyte was awarded a penalty from half way and after a massive hit and it was picked up by his No1. Goal. 3 all. Garangula were on a roll and and another was scored by their No4. Chukka end 4-3 G. Chukka 3. There were 3 grey ponies playing this chukka No1 and 3 for Garangula and No3 Turtle Island. Garangulka were awarded a penalty 30 seconds in which was scored but Simon Keyte, 5-3 G Then Gillion scored and not to be out done by his brother Hamish also scored to tie it up at 5 all. At this stage umpire Glen Gilmore chased the MacGregor family dachsund from the field, (nearly sausagemeat!). Garangula was awarded a penalty and in the play on the attack the whistle went in favour of Turtle Island. Both the teams used the entire field in the insuing play before Garangula scored. 6-5 G. Garangula wenton to the attack in the remaining 30 seconds and Simon eventually picked up a bouncing ball and scored. 7-5 G. Chukka 4. The birds can barely stay aloft, the weather has 'spat the dummy' big time! Turtle Island were given a penalty before the time got going but they hit it wide. Garangula hit a massive hit in with the wind and Turtle Islnd stopped it on the half way and carried it to the goal but wide again. This was the way it went for TI again then in the 5th minute Garangula took a penalty from halfway and Simon opted for a worm burner to keep it out of the wind and after 4 hits it went through. 8-5 G. Chukka 5. By this time it is absolutely pelting down with rain and you can't see a thing, my car was being buffetted by wind, Filthy weather. There was plenty of running up and down the field but neither team making any scoring progress. 3 and a half minutes in Garangula penalty but it was wide. Then to running up and down was on again before the whistle for Turtle Island. The hit was taken and a great melee saw all the Turtl Island time ry to put the ball through before Gillion scored. 8-6 G. Chukka 6. Ed Hitchman came out on a fast pony and caught the opposition off guard to score. 9-6G. The play was fast and running and a penalty to Turtle Island went wide. The rain was now easing and Garangula scored again. 10-6. Garangula then had another penalty but it went wide. The final score was 10-7 to Garangula. The rather forlorn figure of Sam Baillieu was seen treading divots as we all packed up and gotr out of there as quick as we could. Oh for a bex and a lie down, (or as we say in Victoria one or two "Lunas" wouldn't go astray!).

Wednesday 5th November. It was a glorious summer day at Werribee, with a light northerly so we were enjoying the sun and warmth. There was a picnic atmosphere, families sitting on the grass together, the clubhouse hosting the day most generously. Really it could not have been better, everything you imagine the perfect polo day to be. Turtle Island v Sandalford (umpires Simon Keyte, Sam Gairdner). Chukka 1. 4 min 50seconds into the 1st chukka a goal towas scored by Turtle Island and then a penalty hit was taken by Glen Gilmore from the 30 yd, Goal. 1 all. Chukka2. In the 2nd min Hamish Mclachlan, for Turtle Island, scored a goal from a long run down the clubhouse side of the field. 2-1 . A quick equalizer from Glen Gilmore evened it again at 2 all. Stirling took a spectacular tumble but he and pony were ok. 2 all at the end of chukka 2. Chukka 3 started on the boards by the clubhouse from were Hamish hit a goal in the first 30 secs. Again Turtle Island scored a goal from Stirling's mallet 30 secs later. 4-2 Turtle Island. A 30yd penalty in favour of Sandalford was taken by Glen Gilmore and scored and then another goal from Glen tied it up at 4 all. Turtle Island then scored from the field and then Sandalford replied. Turtle Island had a hit from a penalty at the throw in centre field. Stirling had a fantastic run towards goal but alas the head of his mallet broke. Sandalford no 2 Tex Webster scored a masterful goal on the bell to tie the scores at 5 all. Chukka 4 commenced with a penalty centrefield taken by Turtle Island but it was picked off by Glen and a very smooth three hit run gave him the goal 6-5 Sandalford. We had a lengthy delay with the ambo attending Glen Gilmore, however he played on. This spurred on Peter Prendiville for Sandalford as he made an excellent run to the road end and scored. 7-5. Terrific team work between Stirling and Hamish gave Turtle Island the next goal. This ended the chukka 706 Sandalford. Chukka 5. At the 13 sec mark Stirling managed his 2nd 'decking' of the match. Olly Cudmore No1 Sandalford scored to take his team 8-6 up. Hamish McLachlan made a sustained run after pinching the ball from Glen and hit a goal. 8-7. Sandalford scored again by their No4. 9-7. Gillon then took a slow motion dive over the head of his nice black pony and Olly came out in sympathy, both on their feet and ok. Goal to Glen Gilmore of Sandalford after a run from an enormous strike. 10-7 Sandalford. Chukka 6. Turtle Island scored a goal from a penalty then had stopped. 10-8. Sandalford took a penalty 40yd, and Glen Gilmore on a grey pony hit a fabulous goal into the unprotected goal. 11-8. Glen scored another goal (after a 'hit and hope' in the melee, bounced off a horse and bounced back and Gen hit it again successfully). 12-8. A penalty in goal was taken by Turtle Island and Stirling scored 12-9 to end the game. We had a long delay due to the 'yips' with Pitchfork's truck!! Instead of 2pm we started at 3.50pm. I think the delay allowed everyone to relax a little as this week with polo and racing and work as well for some has been pretty full on. Pitchfork v West Side umpires Time Keyte and Ed Hitchman. Chukka 1. in the first minute a 30rd penalty already!, was taken by Greg Keyte but missed. A very fast run by Angus Karroll resulted in a goal for West Side. 1-0 Westside. Greg Keyte then scored a goal off a pass from Sam Gairdner. 1 all. Chukka 2. Neil Craig then scored agoal and then Sam Hopkinson got into the act as well. 3-1 WS. Just as the bell rang Sam Gairdner replied with a goal for Pitchfork. 3-2 WS.
Chukka 3. 2 minutes in Westside scored again through James Harper and again by Sam Hopkinson. 5-2 WS. After a few very "hairy", rush of blood, minutes the umpires declared ZERO TOLERANCE, last warning! Another penalty taken by Greg Keyte but converted this time. 5-3 WS. This opened the gate for Pitchfork and they scored 2 more unanswered goals from Sam and Greg to tie the scores 5 all. Chukka 4. A horse race ensued between Greg and James and Jame won and slotted the goal. 6-5WS. A 30yd unprotected goal penalty taken for Pitchfork by Greg Keyte, goal. 6 all. Neil then scored another goal and James too with magnificent ball control. 8-6 WS. A penalty was converted to take Westside out to a 3 goal lead at the end of the 4th 9-6. Chukka 5. Hoppy put another one through and then Grg Keyte scores for Pitchfork to take the score to 10-7 WS. Pitchfork scored 2 more before Hoppy put one through to end the chukka 11-9 WS. 35 seconds into the 6th Sam Gairdner scored for Pitchfork and a missed penalty by Greg was saved and put back thtough to be 11 all. Greg then scored a field goal and then Neil Craig replied to keep the scores even at 12 all. A penalty was awared to Pitchfork after the first bell of the last chukka and it was converted by Sam Gardiner to give his team victory over Westside 13-12.

STELLE ARTOIS DAY 3

Played on Monday 3rd at Eynesbury Polo Club No 1 Ground. For those who may not know, the fields are situated at the new town of Eynesbury, being built on the Western fringe of Melbourne, just off the M8 Western highway. Also only about 20 kms from Werribee. I arrived during the 2nd chukka of the Sandalford v Garangula match so at the start of chukka 3 the score was Garangula 5 Sandalford 4. Umpires Sam Hopkinson and Corin Gibbs. Chukka 3. Imediatly the Garangula no 4 scored to level things at 5 all. There was a stoppage for injury time after the Garangula No 1 sustained an injury but he was able to play on. The next goal was to No3 for Garangula on a lovely grey pony and betweeen the chukka bells some spectacular ball manoeuvering the lenght of the field resulted in another goal to Garangula which finished the chukka at 7-5 to Garangula. Chukka 4. Sandalford went on the defence in front of their goals and made 2 great saves but Garangula were awarded a penalty and another goal was given to Garangula. The game then opened up and was flowing and on the move. Glen Gilmore was next to score for Sandalford. Penalties were awarded to both teams but the score was not changes and at the end of the 4th it was 8-6 to Garangula. Chukka 5. Just after the start Simon Keyte scored of a pass from a long run down the field by Ed Hitcman. After a huge 'NO WAY" appeal from SK to a foul the umpires went to the 3rd man and no foul was called. The umpires almost played the national anthem to tidy up the line up as the natives were getting very restless. A penalty in Sandalfords's favour was given right in front of goal and was scored. 9-8 Garangula. Chukka 6. SimonKeyte converted a penalty from 40yds to make it 10-8. Glen Gilmore had an uncharacteristic "air shot" but was well supported by his team mates over 3 more hits and a goal resulted. 10-9. Everyone was getting VERY busy now with 3 attacks up and down the field in record time with wides the end result. A great pass along the 'mound' side of the field to Simon Keyte who took it all the way to a crowed goal mouth was eventually pu through. 11-9 Garangula. The lineout was won by Garangula and a long, solitary, easy run for Simon Keyte resulted in another goal. This was absolutely stunning to watch. The final score Garangula 12 Sandalford 9. Match 2. Pitchfork v Turtle Island. Between matches the wind became absolutely freezing, the sky black as and very threatening, but rain stayed away. Huge gusts blowing top soil from barren paddocks on the far side of the Werribee river. Really quite difficult playing conditions. Chukka 1. Pitchfork no4 scored the first goal and then at the later part of the chukka Turtle Island were awarded 2 penalties which resulted in 1 scored and 1 wide. The score 1 all. Chukka 2. This was a very difficult chukka with both teams throwing their toys out of the cot and the umpires taking quite a long time to regather them. One of Turtle Island players hit the ball after the whistle was blown and the kids lost it. After that a Turtle Island penalty into the wind was missed and Pitchfork also missed 2 attacks at goal. Greg Keyte eventually scored for Pitchfork off a 'swing and a miss' from Turtle Island. End result 2-1 to Pitchfork. Things were flowing a bit better now. A foul was blown against Pitchfork (Gillon and Greg had HEAPS to say) after a bit of appealing and gesturing. The umpire once again laid the law down. 2-1 Pitchfork. Chukka 3. Turtle Island took the hit in to start the chukka and took the ball to goal only to have the ball twice stopped dangerously in the goal mouth. Then they had some fabulous back up out of some scrappy play and eventually it was goal to Turtle island. 2 all. Chukka 4 started with a penalty in favour of Turtle Island which went wide. A Pitchfork goal from Tim Clarke after two terrific hits from a throw in with such good team work. It was wonderful stuff. 3-2 Pitchfork. A 60yd penalty taken by Turtle Islands Stirling McGregor, on a lovley, fast, black pony, was put through to level score 3 all. This was immediately followed by another penalty again taken by Stirling, back again into the wind, a home run,and Turtle Island take the lead 4-3. They went further into the lead from a long accurate shot by their no 2 allowed their No1 Hamish McLachlan on a grey pony to score right in the goal mouth. 5-3 Turtle Island. Chukka 5. 2 Goals earliy in the chukka bought the score to 5 all. Then Turtle Island scores a field goal and Pitchfork another penalty. 6 all. In the last 30 secs Stirling scored to take Turtle Island up 7-6. Chukka 6. The No3 for Turtle Island, on a nice grey pony, scored a goal in first minute. Unfortunately the pony sustained an injury to it's face and was retired from the game. Pitchfork scored again. Turtle Isand replied with a goal again from Stirling. 9-7 Turtle Island. An immediate Pitchfork reply 9-8. Play was fast and furious at this stage and at the 5min 35seconds Pitchfork's Greg Keyte took a 30yd penalty to score the goal. 9 all. Within seconds an on spot penalty taken by Greg Keyte for Pitchfork, the hit was then pinched by Turtle Island No3 and they scored the final goal. 10-9 Turtle Island.

An overcast, but warm day, were the conditions for the 1st Sunday games of the Stella Artois Melbourne Cup Polo held on the Chirnside Ground. A good crowd in attendance. The first game was Garangula v West Side: Chukka 1. Five seconds into the game Simon Keyte was almost on the money for Garangula but unluckily the ball hit the post. The play was up and down the field at a rate of knots, Sam Hopkinson hit a massive shot for West Side but it went wide. Penalty followed penalty as the teams played great 'cat and mouse' tactics finishing with a penalty favouring Garangula. . Chukka 2. Simons Keyte's penalty shot for Garangula was wide, however followed by a successful goal, still in the first minute! West Side scored, put through by Neil Craig, from wonderful team work which included plenty of 'roaring and bellowing'. Garangula had a shot at goal by Ed Hitchman from a penalty but no joy. The teams used the whole field making it a pleasure to watch for the spectators. Chukka 3. Jack Archibald scored for Garangula immediately matched by one from the stick of Sam Hopkinson for West Side from a penalty. Following a melee or two a massive hit by Simon Keyte to half way and a fair bit of 'appealing' on a whistle, went to the 3rd man, throw in! The score at half time break was Garangula 3 West Side 4. Chukka 4. An instant goal to Garangula leveled the score. James Harper replied with a goal for West Side. The ambos were called onto the field to attend Hoppy for a wrist/hand injury. He played on and the chukka was a tad 'stop/start' not quite the flowing play as before. Each team went wide of the next two penalties but Sam Hopkinson scored for West Side. Chukka 5. There was a well timed charge by Simon Keyte but he hit the ball just wide. Everything got a bit 'tangled' resulting in a penalty in favour of West Side and a goal to Hoppy. A very fast run by West Side no 2 James Harper towards the golf course end resulted in a fantastic goal. Absolutely amazing stick work again by James Harper and another goal was added to their score. Westside ended the 5th ahead by 5 goals. 9 to 4. Chukka 6. Garangula were the first out of the blocks and scored (Gar5 W/S9) and then another from No 3, Simon Keyte (Gar6 W/S9). Garangula were coming home like a steam train! Simon Keyte did a repeat huge hit from a centre field penalty enabling Ed Mathies to score (Gar7 W/S9), and then Ed again scored from a run in by Simon Keyte but the bell went and the final score was Garangula 8 West Side 9. Game 2 Sandalford v Pitchfork: Chukka 1. Glen Gilmore scored first for the red team from a penalty at the golf course end. Corin Gibbs replied and then Greg Keyte scored from a penalty at the centre of field toward the Mansion end. The score at the end of the chukka was Pitchfork 2 Sandalford 1. Chukka 2. Sandalford were the first off the mark, followed by excellent team work from Pitchfork with an answering goal. Then followed by a penalty in favour of Pitchfork which Greg scored. Glen Gilmore then scored twice in quick succession. Another spectacular goal was scored by Glen under severe pressure from Sam Gairdner just on the bell. Score Pitchfork 4 Sandalford 5. Chukka 3 started with Greg Keyte's "signature loft "from a penalty which was perfectly apprehended by Glen Gilmore at full stretch then a fabulous goal by Sam Gairdner from a throw in. Not long after this was a 'whistle concerto' and a penalty taken again by Greg, another magnificent high ball straight through the middle. This was followed by another successful penalty shot to Pitchfork. On the chukka bell Glen took the ball and only needed 30 seconds and was relentless with a score for Sandalford. Score Pitchfork 7 Sandalford 6. Chukka 4. An immediate goal was scored by Sandalford which evened up the score to 7 each. Glen scored again from a 60 yd penalty to put Sandalford in front. Olly Cudmore put them even further in front after he scored too. A massive hit from the centre to a few metres from goal,it looked all the time a winner for Sandalford, but it was pinched at the death by Sam Gairdner for Pitchfork. Sandalford put through another goal at the close of the 4th chukka. Chukka 5. Pitchfork missed their chance in a melee across goal at the start of the chukka then Glen Gilmore took the penalty but was unsuccessful. An impressive run from the marquee side round to the Mansion goal resulted in a score by Olly Cudmore for red. Tex scored for them next and they were running away with the game. Fired up Pitchfork fought back and Sam Gairdner led the charge with a fabulous run, Greg Keyte scored the goal for green on the bell. Chukka 6. Glen scored for Sandalford in the first 15 seconds. He was then supported by Tex Webster and ran the ball 200 yards but unlucky for them the speed beat them and the ball ran over the backline at the Mansion end. Pitchfork took a centre field penalty and Sam Gairdner and Greg Keyte took it to goal successfully. Corin Gibbs took the next penaly for Pitchfork almost in the goal mouth , scored and then they scored again. A great if unsuccessful comeback. The final score was Pitchfork 11 Sandalford 13.

Match 1 Pitchfork v Garangula: Garangula dominated this confrontation from the first throw in however Pitchfork rallied in the last 2 or 3 chukkas to finish 13 to 8 in favour of Garangula. Conditions were difficult with a terrible wind, a ripper southerly, blowing. To those of us who have been to Werribee you will know what the wind is like. Match 2: Turtle Island v West Side: In the first 30sec of the 1st chukka a huge 100 yd hit from James Harper for West Side score a goal straight from the lineout. There was a reply by Turtle Islands Simon Walker to even it up. Sam Hopkinson scored before Angus Karoll took a fall to end the 1st 2-1 Westside. The 2nd chukka saw 3 goals scored. 1 to Turtle Island from a penalty and 2 to Westside. 4-2 Westside. The 3rd chukka belonged to Turtle Island with Stirling McGregor scoring in the first minute.then a penalty missed before Haminsh tied the scores at 4 all. Another penalty conversion to Turtle Island before Hoppy scored for Westside. Another quick reply by Gillon and the 3rd ended 6-5 to Westside. Chukka 4 had another goal to Turtle Island to make it 6 all but then Hoppy score 3 goals to end the chukka 9-6 Westside. Turtle Island saved a goal and got 3 penalties before Stirling put 1 through. It was goal for goal after that to end the 5th 11-9 Westside. In the final chukka both teams scored 2 goals and the final score was 13-11 to Westside.nTurtle Island rallied, but maybe match readiness favoured West Side, having played so recently at Ellerston. Stirling MacGregor for Turtle Island made several long sustained runs, showing how fit his ponies are so early in the season.

ELLERSTON SPRING TROPHY FINALS

Todays games were played on the Home Field. The prelimanary games saw Willowcroft defeat Ellerston Black 10-6 and Garangula defeat Halkeas Group 11-9. The final was between Ellerston White v Sandalford. Sandalford got away to a dream start and at half time had a very good lead but Ellerston reduced that in the 4th then in the 5th chukka White took the lead. The game was played at a cracking pace with some wonderful goals scored. The final score was 13-12 to White. The best players for the White team were Jared McHardy, Sam Hopkinson and Matty Grimes who were everywhere in attack and defense and Max Hutchinson who had his best game of the tournament scoring 2 very good goals in the final. Glen Gilmore and Jock Mackay stood out for the Sandalford team. The scorers for the White were Max Hutchinson 2, Sam Hopkinson 5 and Jared McHardy 6, For Sandalford Olly Cudmore 2, Jock Mackay 4 and Glen Gilmore 6. The
MVP was awarded to Jared McHardy and the Champion Pony was "Centimetre" played by Jared McHardy.

Report from Jume Gilmore. The games today were played on the school field on a beautiful warm spring day. Three teams went into today’s games on 3 points and everyone eagerly awaited the results to determine the finalists. They were Willowcroft in the first, Sandalford in the second and Ellerston White in the third. Willowcroft v Ellerston Black:( Black receiving 1 start on handicap) The scores were tied at half time and we thought we were in for a great game of polo but Ellerston Black came out with a great team effort in the 4th Chukka, scoring 5 goals to nil, with James Harper scoring a magnificent 5b. This seemed to take the wind out of the Willowcroft sails and the end score was 11-8 to Black. In covering the best players we would have to mention all the black team with special note to Neil Craig, when he is on his favourite little mare NONAGE, always scoreing 2 or 3 goals. For Willowcroft Damien Johnston played well. Scorers for Black were Neil Craig 3, James Harper 6 and Jeff Fisher 1. For Willowcroft D.J. 6 and Ed Gould 2. Sandalford v Halkeas Group: When Sandalford lead 3-1 at the end of the first they may have been confident, but by the end of the 6th the score was 9-9. In the extra chukka both teams went from end to ends of the field but a penalty converted by Glen Gilmore saw Sandalford win 10-9. Olly Cudmore was tireless in defence. The best players of the game were Glen Gilmore, Olly Cudmore and all the Halkeas team. Scorers for Sandalford were Olly Cudmore 1, Jock MacKay 1, Glen Gilmore 7 and Peter Prendaville 1. For Halkeas Mike King 4, Ali Muzzio 3, Sandra Carder 1 and Dirk Gould 1. Ellerston White V Garangula: Ellerston White were already into the tournament final due to Tournament Rules, however Garanagula were playing for pride. In a fast, open game, the score was 5-5 at the end of the 4th Chukka but White skipped away to finished 10-7. Best players of the game were Sam Hopkinson and Simon Keyte. Scorers for White were Matt Grimes 1, Sam Hopkinson 6 and J McHardy 3. For Garangula Ed Hitchman 2 and Simon Keyte 5.

Today’s polo was played on the North field and it was absolutely blood freezing!!! Ellerston White v Willowcroft: Willowcroft got off to a good start and were cruising at the end of the 3rd chukka 7-3 but Ellerston turned things around in the 4th to level at 7-7. The games momentum had changed and Ellerston came out the victors 11-9. Best players of the game were S.Hopkinson, J.McHardy, J.LeHardy and D.Johnston. Scorers for Willowcroft were LeHardy 3, D.J. 4 and Ed Goold 2. For Ellerston Max Hutchinson 2, S.Hopkinson 4 and J.McHArdy 5. Garangula v Sandalford: This game never reached any great heights with Sandalford winning 10-5. The best players for the game were Olly Cudmore, Glen Gilmore and Jock Mackay. Scorers for Garangula Jack Archibald 1, Ed Hitchman 1 and S.Keyte 3. For Sandalford Olly Cudmore 4, Jock Mackay 1 and Glen Gilmore 5. Ellerston Black v Halkeas Group: Ellerston Black received 1 start and put this to their advantage scoring 2 quick goals to be 3-1 at the end of the first. They kept this going untill the 5th when Ali Muzzio scored 5 goals (2 penalties and 3 field goals) and Dirk 1 to make the score 12-11 in Halkeas’ favour. With the score tied up at the end of the 6th we went into extra time and after half a chukka Neil Craig scored the winning goal. All the black team contributed to this win and Ali Muzzio nearly won this game with an outstanding effort of 9 goals. Scorers for Ellerston Neil Craig 3, Tom Beim 2, James Harper 7 and Jeff Fisher 1. Tuesday 21st October. Todays games were played on North Field on a cool overcast day.
Ellerston White v Ellerston Black. This was a good open game with some nice goals scored but a lot quieter than past White v Black games!!! James Harper received a whack in the mouth and required 3 stitches.White were the winners 14-12.The best players for White were Sam Hopkinson, J.McHardy and Matt Grimes. For Black, J.Harper and Neil Craig, who played his position at 1 very well, had an outstanding 4th chukka on a little mare called NONAGE. Scorers for White: Max Hutchinson 1, Matty Grimes 3, Sam Hopkinson 5 and J.McHardy 5. For Black: Neil Craig 3, Tom Beim 2, James Harper 6 and Jeff Fisher 1. Garangula vHalkeas: This game never reached any great heights and Garangula did as they have in their other games, got away to a good start then fall away. Halkeas took the lead in the 5 th.chukka and ran out winners 10-8 even though they missed a lot of penalty shots. Best players for the game were Ally Muzzio and Dirk Gould. Scorers for Garangula: Ed Matthies 1, Ed Hitchman 3 and Simon Keyte 4. For Halkeas: Sandra Carder 1, Dirk Gould 3, Ally Muzzio 5 and Mike King 1. Willowcroft v Sandalford This game was to see which team would have 3 wins on the board after the game. At half time this game looked like it might be a close encounter but Willowcroft were much stronger in the second half and won convincingly 11-6 with Ed Gould, very strong at back, breaking down any attacking plays Sandalford started. The best players for the game were Ed Gould and D.J. Scorers for Willowcroft: Jamie Le Hardy 3, Damien Johnston 6 and Ed Goold 2. For Sandalford: Olly Cudmore 2 and Glen Gilmore 4.

Willowcroft v Halkeas Group: 11-5 to Willowcroft. This was a good team effort by Willowcroft whilst Dirk Gould tried hard for Halkeas Group. Scorers: Willowcroft, Jamie LeHardy 5, D.J. 4, and Ed Goold 2. Halkeas Group, Sandra Carder 1, Dirk Gould 2, Ally Muzzio 1 and Mike King 1.
Garangula v Ellerston Black. Garangula 11-7. Garangula combined well with Ed Hitchman doing the damage for the winners. For Black James Harper was the stand out player. Scorers, Garangula, Ed Matthies 1, Jack Archibald 2, Ed Hitchman 5 and Simon Keyte 3. Ellerston Black, Tom Beim 1and James Harper 5. They recieved 1 on handicap. Thanks to June Gilmore.

The pics that i attach will be from tournaments throughout 08.Day 1 Saturday 18/10/08. A beautiful day with the games being played on the School field in front of a small crowd. Game 1 Sandalford v Ellerston Black. Ellerston got away to a good start having receiving a goal on handicap and Neil Craig scoring a good field goal. At the end of the 3rd chukka the score was 4 all. Then after a very close match the game ended up in Sandalford’s favour 9-8 The best players on the day were Neil Craig, Jeff Fisher, Glen Gilmore. The goals were scored by: Ellerston Black: Neil Craig 3, James Harper 2 and Jeff Fisher 2. For Sandalford: Jock Mackay 2 and Glen Gilmore 7. Game 2 Garangula v Willowcroft: This was another close game with Garangula getting off to a flyer, lead 4 nil at the end of the first, Willowcroft responded to be 5-4 at the end of the second. The scores stayed close through out the rest of the game but Willowcroft came out ahead 11-10. The best players on the day were D.J,. and Ed Hitchman. The goals scorers were, Garangula: Ed Matthies 1, Ed Hitchman 3 and S.Keyte 6. Willowcroft: Jamie LeHardy 2, D.J. 7 and Ed Goold 2. Game 3 Ellerston White v Halkeas Group. The third close game of the day had only a goal separating both teams at any time. The end score was 9-8 to Ellerston White. There was a very notable goal scored by Matt Grimes in the sixth chukka with the ball bouncing very high and Matty still able to control and slot the goal. The best players on the day were M.Grimes and Ally Muzzio. The goals were scored by, Ellerston White: M.Grimes 5, Sam Hopkinson 1, J.McHardy 3 (known to most of us as Riggs). Halkeas Group: Dirk Gould 1, Ally Muzzio 5 and Mike King 1.

The final of the Elysian 4 goal was won by LSA Recruitment. The game was low scoring with 1st chukka score going all the way till the last. Taman Kuda were up 2 1/2 - 1 but LSA fired up in the 4th to take the final 4 2 1/2. The champion pony was awarded to Taman Kuda patron Kim Goodall's "Jamaica" who he bought off Jeff Banard early this year. The MVP was James Shepherd. The 14 goal final was played for the Australian Open Trophy between Willowcroft and Halkeas. The two women patrons marked each other hard all he game and it was a good game to watch. Willowcroft jumped out to a 3 goal lead a nd it was not till half way through the 3rd chukka that Halkeas got their 1st goal. DJ was making his come back after tearing his riding muscle early in the tournament and he was in dlistering form with great support from Ed and Jamie. Halkeas did not play badly it was just one of those games were Willowcroft could do nothing wrong. The final score was 9-5 to Willowcroft. The MVP was Jamie Le Hardey and the Champion Pony was "Blonde" played several times by Ed Goold and the Team of Ponies also went to Ed with "Blondie", "Locket" and "Smooch". Mike King made a heartfelt speech after the presentation thanking all those who had stuck by, and with, him over the termoil of the past year and hoped that polo would not be over at Elysian Fields but he did not know what the future held for him. I am sure our readers , along with us, wish Kingy and Kelly all the best for the out come ahaed. Thanks for the boost you have given Qld and Australian polo and we WILL see you again Mike.

ELYSIAN 4 AND 14 GOAL FINALS

After the 4 goal play at Elysian the important polo took place. Glen Gilmore is a great supporter of Kids Polo and 4 children, with a couple of big kids, had a couple of chukkas across the field. It was great. Here are some pics of the Johnston Twins, Chad and Louis, Lachie Gilmore and Grace Barnard.

The finals in the 4 goal will be layed out between ASL Windows and Taman Kuda. There were 3 teams that could have made it to the finals to challenge ASL Windows before yesterdays games. If Taman Kuda befeated Ballandown then they were through but the were defeated by 1/2 a goal so that ment the winners out of City Motor Auction and Alsace would go through. BUT they had a draw and that ment that a count back was won by Taman Kuda so they got to the final. In the 14 goal Halkeas were through to final but there were 3 other teams that could make it. Sandalford, who played Halkeas first, Willowcroft and SEQP who were playing each other next. Halkeas played their other string of horses and were beaten convincingly by Sandalford which ment SEQP could not make the final but Willowcroft had to win to knock Sandalford out. They did win so the final today is between Halkeas and Willowcroft.

ELYSIAN 14 GOAL

Wednesday the 8th results. Halkeas and SEQP had a draw 14 all. Willowcroft, with the replacement for DJ after tearing his riding muscle, Sam Hopkins, defeated Custodian by a couple and Sandalford defeated Garangula. The teams are very even and Fridays games will decide the finalsist. The first 2 games, Halkeas v Sandalford and Willowcroft v SEQP. Any of these 4 teams can make the finals. PINK PICNIC POLO DAY

The Pink Picnic Polo Day was held on Sunday. The first game was the final of the womens tournament between FH Polo in green and A&L Windows in pink. FH Polo got away to a fast and furious start with Philipa Fitz-Henry scoring early in the 1st. Green attached the goal several more times but good defense from Sandra Ballard and Sue Lock saved the pink team. At the end of the 1st it was 1-1/2 to green. The 2nd started the same way as the 1st with Philipa scoring 2 running goals. The pink girls rallied and attacked towardes the end of the chukka but it ran wide. 3-1/2 to green. The 3rd chukka was fast and furious, the speed that these girls played at was great and even the men were suprised how fast it was going, with both teams attacking the goals but no more goals were scored. Pink took a penalty but missed and the ball was cleared by Philipa and taken all the way to the goal but she could not get it through. Another penalty was awarded to pink and the ball stopped beside the post but would not roll across the line. The pink girls fired up then and Sandra, again on the "young" one Ziggy, Stole the ball from a dangerous attack by green and turned the tables to score. 3-1 1/2. Another penlty was given to pink and converted. The chukka ended 3-2 1/2. The 4th started with Philipa attacking again on Salabre then counter attack from pink as they hit 2 more behinds. A knock in across the goal by Yvonne Freskie was picked up by Philipa and taken all the way to score. Some of the watching men were in awe and several of the male players comented on what a great goal it was. 4-2 1/2. The pink girls were not don yet though and an other good goal was scored by Amanda Pierson for pink. 4 3 1/2. With the clock winding down the ball was thrown in and taken from the lineout by Sue and --------------SCORE. The bell went and A&L Windows had run out the winners by 4-4 1/2. Well done to all the girls playing in the tournament as i think they have set a great standard for ladies polo and everyone that watched the the final were thrilled with the standard of play. The MVP was awarded the Philipa Fitz-Henry. The next game was the Patrons game and this was won by Talmore. K. Goodall -2, M. Huebner 0, R. Ross 0 and N. Ford 0. One of the highlights of this game was Wayne Fussel riding out to start the 4th chukka on a grey 10hh pony. The 2 14 goal games played saw Halkeas, once again come back in the 6th afater being 3 goals down against Willowcroft, to win by 1 goal. Muzzio and Arizona dominataed the chikka and ran several rings around the oppisition. In the 6th also DJ was replaced by Craig Wilson after tearing his riding muscle. He is going to be replaced for the rest of the tournament by Sam Hopkins. The second 14 goal game was won by Sandalford over Custodian by 2 goals. Thank you the Mike King for the use of Elysian Fields to help the polo community to raise funds for NBCF.

ELYSIAN 4GOAL, 14 GOAL AND WOMENS TOURNAMENTS

It was all go on the Elysian Fields Wadham fields today with 6 games played today. At 9am a 14 goal match between Garangula and SEQP saw Garangula win by 1 goal. Three 4 goal games followed that. The first was won by LSA over Ballandown by half a goal. The second was a draw between Alsace and City Motors Auction. The third was a win to Taman Kuda over Mortimores. Next came the 2 ladies games. the first was between FH Polo and City Motor Auction with the later winning by half a goal and the second had The Pink Ladies run over the top of the Pol Roger team by 4 goals. The finals of the Ladies Tournament will be played between FH Polo and The Pink Ladies tomorrow at the Pink Picnic Polo Day at 10am. At 11am there will be a Patrons match with Labour City: A. Northcott -2, J. Freschi 1, A. Russo 0 and W. Fussel 0 playing against Talmore: K. Goodall -2, M. Huebner 0, R. Ross 0 and N. Ford 0. At 12.30 the first of the 2 14 goal games are on with Halkeas taking on Willowcroft and then Custodian playing Sandalford.

Elysian Ladies Tournament

Game 1: City Motor Auction. 1 Allessia Russo, 2 Bec Northmore, 3 Piet Barnard and 4 Rebecca Arnott. Pol Roger. 1 Jo Reid, 2 Cathy Wallis, 3 Nino Smith and Annie MacDonald and Judy Brian played as 1 player in position 4. Tex Webster was given the job of trying to tell these women when they were wrong and lucky for him they were not wrong too often. The crowd was minimal with only the die hard supporters and family present to watch a game of polo that was played much better that the handicaps would lead you to think. In the 1st chukka all the players on the field had a hit of the ball as it was taken up and down the field. A penalty was awarded to both teams but the shooters were unable to score and the chukka ended as it began with a half start to City Motor Auctions. In the early stages of the 2nd a penalty was taken by Nino and she scored the first of the game. ½ to 1. The 3rd chukka saw open play with Piet running the length of the field only to have the ball stolen by Nino in the goal mouth and taken back to her goal but it went wide. Piet was on the attack all the way through the chukka having 2 more attempts on goal but the score never changed. City Motors took a penalty which was cleared and in a team effort by Pol Roger the ball was taken to the goals were City Motors scrimmaged and cleared the ball to safety. The 4th was the same with the ball being bruised up and down the field until Cathy Wallis put it through to take her team, Pol Roger, to the victory. ½ to 2. Well done to all the players.

Game 2: FH Polo. 1 Robin Fitzhenry, 2 Cindy Padman, 3 Phillipa Fitzhenry and 4 Yvonne Freskie. A & L Windows. 1 Chloe Hunt, 2 Amanda Pierson, 3 Sandra Ballard and 4 Sue Lock. Lance Shepherd, after seeing what an easy job Tex had, took the whistle in this game. The A&L Windows had gone all out and had pink shirts and matching saddle cloths. I am not sure if the FH Polo teams spent the first chukka looking at how good their opposition looked but at the end of the first the pink girls had run the greens all over the field with Chloe and Sandra both scoring goals. The 1st ended 0 to 2. The green girls composed themselves in the 2nd and after fast play up and down the field Phillipa scored from the field. Moments later a penalty was awarded to FH Polo and Robin was on her game scoring to take the score to 2 all. Sandra Ballard came out on a very impressive “young” one in the 3rd and attacked relentlessly. She took a penalty but it missed and on the knock in she stole the ball but was unable to find the posts. Stlii 2 all. The 4th started with another penalty to pink but again the ball would not cooperate. Robyn also took another penalty but it was met in the goal mouth and cleared. The play went to and froe until Yvonne Freskie was able to score to give FH Polo the win. 3 to 2. Again well done to all the players.

ELYSIAN 14 GOAL DAY 2

Today Willowcroft defeated Sandalford by 1 goal. The second game saw Custodian defeat SEQP in the last chukka 8-6 and the third game was a thriller with Elysian making a great come back on the shoulders of that man Muzzio riding Arazona to defeat Garangula 11-10. In the 5th chukka Elysian were behind 10-6 before they made a mad dash for the line and were able to score the winning goal with 5 seconds when Simon Keyte rode off to change his horse and a knock in had to be taken before he returned. muzzio was able to intercept it and that was that.

ELYSIAN 4 AND 14 GOAL

The first 2 days play of the Elysian Spring 4 gaol have seen L.S.A. prove the team to beat. On Saturday LSA defeated City Motors by 1. Taman Kuda defeated Alsace by 4 and Ballandown defeated Mortimers by 1. On Sunday LSA defeated Taman Kuda by 1. Alsace defeated Ballandown by 5 and City Auction defeated Mortimers. Please see previous blog for team members. The first dats play in the 14 goal saw Halkeas beat Custodian by 2 goals. The 2nd game was a draw between Willowcroft and Garangula and SEQP defeated Sandalford in the dying seconds of the last chukka.
The first weekend was very hot with a few people taking a dip in the lake. The Saturday temp was around 29 and Sunday was 30ish with more of the same on the way. There will be a lot of grooms and spectators walking around with red arms and legs after the polo. Don't forget to slip, slop and slap.

KOORALBYN 10 GOAL

The Kooralbyn 10 goal final was won by Custodian over Taman Cuda. Custodian made their customary slow start and were down 3-0 as opposed to the day before were they were 4-0 before they scored. Taman Cuda kept the the pressure on but Custodian took a 8-4 lead before the opposition kicked into overdrive to take the score to 9 all in the sixth and then Custodian scored to win the game. The remaining teams in the tournament split up and added players that are taking part in the 14 goal to start to prepare for the next tournament. Teams and draw for the 14 goal will follow.

KOORALBYN 10 GOAL

The semi finals of the Kooralbyn 10 goal were played yesterday at Ed Goolds Bromelton House field. The first semi saw Taman Cuda defeated Willowcroft by 1 goal. I didnt see this game so i cant report on it. The 2nd semi was between Writgh Properties and Custodian. It was a threatening sign when, at the end of the first chukka, Wrights were up by 4 to 0. Custodian pulled it together to get back to even and a ding dong battle ensued with one team scoring and then the other. At the 6 minute mark in the 6th chukka it was all even and in the dying seconds Custodian scored to win 11-10. The final will be played today at the Salisbury field out Kooralbyn way at 12.30. There was one change to the teams posted in previous blogs with Jack Smith replacing the -2 in the Custodian team.

MERCEDES BENZ

The sun was shinning on the many spectators and guests that attended the finals of the Merceded Benz 4 and 10 goals at Alsace.

The 4 goal final was taken out, after a come back, by Mercedes Silver. Vince has got the one he was looking for by winning this trophy. Mercedes White were in the lead untill the last chukka when the Rawlings boy and James set the field on fire.

The 10 goal final between CL Class and SL was an action packed affair with the CL team scoring the first few goals and then they were over run by SL to be down 3-6 at one stage and then Guy Kirkpatrick came out on the Champion Pony "Maple" and let loose. Dirk and Kingy had been toiling hard all game and all of a sudden the 4 of them clicked and off they went. SL were shaken and couldn't get back on top of the momentum and at the bell CL won 11-7. The Team op Ponis was won by Dirk Gould with "Monster", "India" and "Scratch".

The finals of the 2008 Mercedes Benz tournament have been decided. The 4 goal section sees Vince Ferraro's Primo Mercedes Silver, going for the trifector of wins after winning the last 2 tournaments, playing Mark Tocchinis Mercedes White after they defeated Angelo Russos team to progess.The 10 goal final was a bit harder to get to with 6 teams competing and play reduced to 2 days for some reason which ment that the teams had to play for margins to make the finals. The 1st and 2nd games each team won by 7 goals so that wiped out the 3rd game. the final is between SL Green and CL Class Maroon.

KOORALBYN 10 GOAL

The first days play in the Kooralbyn 10 goal was held today at the Salisbury Field. The tournament was supposed to be held last weekend but the rain that fell was enough to call it off with the the games being scheduled to fit in with the other tournaments still to come before the 14 goals start. The 11am game was between Taman Cuda (Kim Goodall, Glen Gilmore, Adam Grills and Ed Goold) and Wright Properties (Glen Wright, Guy Kirkpatrick, Dirk Gould and Mike King). The score at the end of the 6th chukka was 11 all so they saddled up to play the 7th and at the end of the 7th it was still 11 all so an 8th chukka was on the cards. The goal posts were widened and eventually Taman Cuda managed to sneek 1 through to take the game 12 to 11. the 12.30 game was Willowcroft (Sadie Michelle, Will Gilmore, Mark Lillyman and Rob Ballard) against Alsace (Neil Ford, Wayne Glennie, Tex Webster and Shane Martin). Willowcroft came out with all guns firing and at one stage in the game were up 8 to 1 but Alsace fought back and at the final bell Willowcroft had won 10 to 6. The 3rd game was between Custodian (Guy Higginson filling in for John Fitzgerald, Craig Wilson, Mark Field and Beau Skerret) and A and L Windows (Dean Caulfield, Damian Johnston, Steve Barnard and ill White). Custodian were to strong and the final score was 14 to 3. I think the finals for this tournament will be played, weather and circumstances permitting, on the weekend of 20th and 21st September.

It is with great regret that i inform the polo community of the passing, after a long illness, of Garry White. "Whitey", as we all knew him, was a great player and supporter of polo in Victoria and Australia wide. You could always count on him popping the boot of his car and offering you a drink of some kind and an invite back to his place for more of the same and maybe there might be a bit of food thrown in too. He was the sort of person that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it and what ever else he had that you could use as well. Out condolences go out to his family and friends at this sad time. You will always be remembered and thanks for the memories Whitey.

Today was the final of the Qld Gold Cup at Elysian Fields. The 10 goal was carried on from last weekend but the Bronze and Silver Cups were only played for over the last 2 days. The Bronze Cup final was played between A & L Windows, A. Pierson -2, A. Gilmore 1, W. Gilmore 3 and W. White 0 and LSA Recruitment A. Northcott -2, Z. Hagerdoon 0, T. Webster 4 and J. Barnard 0 The winners were LSA Recruitment. The Silver Cup final was between Alsace J. Smith -2, W. Glennie 3, T. Webster 4 and N. Ford 0 and they were defeated by Primo Properties V. Ferraro -1, J. Shepherd 0, R. Rawlings 4 and J. Rawlings 1. The Gold Cup final was taken out by Custodian M. Ingham 1, S. Hunt 2, C.Wilson 6 and G Higginson 1 after they defeated Wright Properties M King 2, Dirk Gould 4, G Kirkpatrick 4 and G Wright 0 by 15 to 8. Wright Properties won the AB Parker and AF McWilliam's Perpetual Trophy. The WJ Tomkins Memorial Cup for the Champion Pony was won by "Bali" played by Craig Wilson and he also won the Mr Adolf Feez Trophy for the Team of Ponies with "Bell", "Danger", "Hover", "Poppet" and "Mia". The Allora Club Perpetual Trophy for the most promising player under 21 was awarded to James Shepherd. PINK PICNIC POLO DAY

For the three years before last year (when EI ruined a lot of things) we always held the Pink Picnic Polo Day in early October. The days contributed more than a million dollars to charity.

For those of you who have been to a Pink Picnic Polo Day the day needs no introduction. The day was a wonderful contributor to the "Pink Ribbon" charity program of the National Breast Cancer Foundation" .

Despite the negative media publicity Michael has received for the last 6 months he is determined to hold the day this year because he believes the need for the NBCF to be supported outweighs whatever negative attack the media will make on him personally for holding the day.

So this year it will be on SUNDAY the 5th of October and we want everyone to come and empty their pockets for charity.

AND WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO LET EVERYONE KNOW FAR AND WIDE THAT ITS ON AND ITS ALL ABOUT THE PINK RIBBON PROGRAM FOR THE NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION

AND WE NEED YOU TO BE THERE WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

There will be two high goal games, the final of the Elysian ladies tournament and our usual Patrons challenge plus heaps of other fun and activities.

Sorry no ball this year and no 26 goal game but that is the price we all have to pay to get this day off the ground again for the benefit of the NBCF.

QUEENSLAND GOLD CUP

4 teams took part in the first weekend of the 10 goal for the Gold Cup at Elysian Fields. With the serious eye injury sustained by Ron Wanless he unfortunately has had to pull his Wastecorp team out of the season. Thankfully Jim MacGinleys patron, Kim Goodall, has stepped up to help keep the 4th team in the the 10 goal. His team is named Taman Cuda which is Malay for Horse Park. He is playing with DJ, Steve Barnard and Will Hanbury. Custodian has had another change after Trent Walkden had a car accident through the week and suffered a broken arm. Marty Ingham has taken his place and is playing with Sam Hunt, John Fitzgerald and Craig Wilson. Willowcroft has Rob Barnard, Saddie Michelle, Will Gilmore and Ed Goold. Wright Property has Glen Wright, Guy Kirkpatrick, Dirk Gould and Mike King. Saturdays games saw Wright Property defeat Taman Cuda 16-6. Custodian defeated Willowcroft 11-8. Sunday sawillowcroft defeat Wright Property 9-8 and Custodian defeated Taman Cuda 10-9.

The Motorline BMW has been held for another year in fine conditions tho there was a cool breeze blowing in the morning but thankfully it dropped in the afternoon. The 4 goal final was won by Vince Ferraro's Primo Property. He was ably assisted by James Shepherd, Richard and Jim Rawlings. They defeated Angelo Russo's City Motor Auction Group. Angelo had imported a hired gun from down south in the form of Simon Hill but it was not enough with Vince's team scoring the winning goal in the dying seconds of the last chukka. He also had help from Shane Martin and Beau Skerret. The 10 goal final got under way after a stampede onto the field by the spectators to find the golden horse shoe and as an after thought to stomp the divots. The 2 final teams were the teams that had to bring in subtitute players after injuries to their regular players. Wastecorp patron Ron Wanless sustained a very serious eye injury while playing polo at the Brisbane Royal Show on the Sunday before his tournament and he was replaced by Will White who did a great job in trying to fill Ronnie's shoes. He was playing with Damien Johnston, Steve Barnard and Zac Haggadorn. Custodian had also had a team restructure with Mark Field breaking his collarbone on the previous Saturday. There -2 and Mark were replaced by Trent Walkden and Sam Hunt. They combined with Graig Wilson and John Fitzgerald. Custodian came out on fire and in the 2nd chukka they were up 6-2 when Zac was hammering to goal with the other players and he hit the ground very hard. He was replaced by Jeff Barnard and as Zac went off the field so too did the momentum that Custodian had built up. Wastecorp came back hard and fast and the score was tied at 6 all at the end of the 4th. The momentum was still with Wastecorp and Custodian had to play catch up for the last 2 chukkas and they were at 9-10 when a penalty was awarded to Wastecorp with about 20 seconds left on the clock which they converted to win 11-9. The MVP was awarded to a popular and shy Will White. The Champion Pony was "Bali" played by Craig Wilson and the Team of Ponies were "Larger", "Hypher" and "Charm" played by DJ. It was good to see Ronnie out of hospital for the day to support his team.

Wastecorp have today made up for the loss that they incurred at the hands of Willowcroft last weekend by defeating them today to progress to the final tomorrow. They will be playing Custodian who overcame Wright Properies in extra time. The 4 goal final will be between Vince Farrera's Primo and Angelo Russo's City Motor Auction. Sundays play will be at Ron Wanless Logan Downs were one can only imaging the tents will be overflowing with spectators and supporters.

BMW AT LOGAN DOWNS

Hi everyone, I am sorry that the web page has not been updated for a while, there has been a bit going on up here. Last weekend was the Bromelton House 10 and 4 Goal. The 4 goal was won by Primo. Vince Ferraro, James Shepherd, Jeff Barnard and Richard Rawlings. The 10 goal was won by Willowcroft, Sadie Michelle, Mark Lillyman, Rob Ballard and Will Gilmore, over Wright Properties. On Saturday Willowcroft scored an upset win over Wastecorp in overtime and Custodian were leading Wright Properties by 4 goals when Mark Field and Dirk Gould collided and Mark broke another collarbone. Yes you read right, another collarbone. Ed Goold replaced Mark and did a good job on unkown horses. The Ekka (Brisbane Exhibition) Polo, at the showground, has been on this week ans on Sunday night Ron Wanlass was hit in the eye with a polo stick. He has cut under his eye and also his retina so he was taken to hospital and operated on that night. He has to keep his eye covered for 2 months. I am sure all our readers will, along with Muz and myself, wish Ron all the best for his recovery. His place this weekend in Wastecorp will be filled by Will White. Mark's place in Custodian will be filled by Sam Hunt and Trent Walkden is now back in the team. More results tonight.

ASHLING TOURNAMENT

The start of the Queensland 10 goal season was at Glen and Juliette Wrights Ashling. This was the opening of his field also. The 6 goal section had 6 temas competing and the final was won by Primo: Vince Farerra, Richard and Jim Rawlings and James Shepherd. They defeated Alsace: Wayne Glennie, Shane Martin, Amanda Pierson and Niel Ford 4 to 3. The 10 goal had 4 teams playing and the final was between Wastecorp: Damien Johnston, Zac Haggadorn, Steve Barnard and Ron Wanless and Willowcroft: Sadie Michelle, Will Gilmore, Mark Lillyman and Rob Ballard. Watecorp were the winners 10 to 9. They held a 9-4 lead at one stage in the game before Rob Ballard cut loose in the last couple of chukkas to bring them even at 9 all before Wastecorp scored the winning goal in the last minute. The Champion Pony was Valansa played by DJ. He is a Wanless bred gelding out of Clover and by Highlight, John Pattersons stallion. The MVP was awarded to Rob Ballard.

Also a belated congrats to Tommy and Lissette Wilson on the birth of their daughter Ruby in England 8 weeks ago. The English pre season handicap list has been released and a few of the changes are listed below. Unfortunately i have to report that England beat Australia, on Sunday the 27th July to take out the Coronations Cup, 10 to 9. I dont have any reports yet just a text to say that it was a very good game. In the curtain raiser before the Cup The Prince of Wales team was defeated by The Hurlingham Polo Team 7 to 71/2. The Prince Of Wales team was Santham Dhillon 5, James Harper 5, Tom Morley 6 and Nacho Gonzalez (c) 6. Nacho, for those who dont know, is the son of Linda Shepherd. The Hurlingham team was Johnny Good 5, Jamie Lee Hardy 5, Henry Brett (c) 6 and Chris Hyde 6. I will have more to report on the game later.

Loro Piana have proved too strong for Ellerston and have won the Gold Cup for the British Open 11-10. Loro Piana team was Alfio Marchini 2, David Stirling 8, Juan Martin Nero 10 and Jamie Peel 2. The Ellerston team was Max Routledge 2, Gonzalo Pieres Jr.9, Facundo Pieres Jr. 10 and James Packer / Tom Barrack 1. The MVP was Juan Martin Nero and the Champion Pony was "Noche" played by Juan Mar also.

ALSACE 6 AND CITY MOTORS 2 GOAL

The finals have been run and won. The game were played at Alsace and the results are as follows.

The 2 goal final was won by Wastecorp over Primo 5-3. In the other games City Auction beat Mortimers in the first game of the day and then Alsace beat Peppers.

The 6 goal final was won by Wright Property over Custodian 8-5. Glen Wright was replaced in the 4th chukka after having a couple of falls. Halkeas beat Willowcroft 9-71/2. Sadie Michelle is on a plane going over to support the Aussies at the Coronations. She will join Ed Gould, who is the Aussie reserve, James Archibald, Steph Warton, who has gone to keep DJ in check, and i am sure that there are a lot more there that we have not heard about.

Todays games were played at Elysian Field and tomorrow the finals will be held back at Niel and Trish Fords "Alsace". Custodian will play Wright Property in the final of the 6 gaol and Primo will play Wastecorp in the 2 goal final

Todays results are. in the 6 goal Halkeas defeated Willowcroft. Wright Property defeated Custodian. In the 2 goal Wastecorp defeated City Auction who had a few replacement players today with Arther Morgenstien and his wife replacing Angelo Russo and J Morgan. Primo defeated Alsace and Peppers defeated Mortimores.

In England Ellerston have made it through to the second high goal final for the season. They defeated Sumaya 14-11 and their opposition Loro Piana defeated Brittany Polo 14-10. Well done teams. All the beat for the finals.

Bicester Village Polo International

Great Britain beat our Australian side at the Bicester Village Polo International at Kirtlington on the 28th June. The 21 goal English side took on the 26 goal Australian team. Great Britain started with a 3 and a half goal handicap advantage. They held the lead throughout the game, ending with a score of 6 and a half to 5. Australias Ruki Baillieu's grey Pony, Vision, won best playing pony.

ELYSIAN FIELDS 6 AND 2 GOAL

The Elysian Fields 6 and 2 goal tournament will be played over 2 weekends. There are 6 teams in both grades with players having travelled from the Downs to have a run on the fields in the sunshine. Guy Kirkpatrick copped a ball on the point of the elbow in the first game of the tournament so he was replaced by Ed Gould the first day and Mat Grimes for the second day. There doesn't seem to anything broken in his elbow but it is very swollen. Hopefully he will be on deck for next weekend. Ed Gould had a horse fall on him on the second day but played on and after the game he was put into an ambulance as he has pain in his hips and lower back.

The semi’s were be held on Wed 11th of June with Ellerston defeating Azzura 10-9 and Loro Piana (the defending champions) loosing to Sumaya 9-12. The teams are Ellerston: Max Routledge 2, Gonzalo Pieres Jr. 9, Facundo Pieres 10, James Packer / Tom Barrack 1. Total 22. Azzura: Charlie Wooldridge 0, Lucas James 6, Marcos Heguy 9, Gaston Lahule 7. Total 22. Loro Piana: Alfio Marchini 2, David Stirling 8, Juan Martin Nero 10. Jamie Peel 2. Total 22. In Ellerston’s quarter final match Fucundo Pieres was injured and his place was taken by Pablo MacDonough, but it is hoped that he will be able to play on for the rest of the Ellerston games. In one of the league games Eduardo Heguy of the Les Lions team and Pepe Heguy of the Samaya team were given yellow cards after a rather heated match. Spencer Young’s team, Yindarra, have made their first foray into the high goal in England. He is playing with Francisco Bensadon 8, Gonchi von Wernich 7 and Nicolás Espain or Agustin Nero 7. The finals will be held on Sunday night/Monday morning our time.

TERRY SMITH

It is with great regret that i inform the polo community of the sudden passing of Terry Smith. Smithy, as we all knew him, had returned to the polo world after a long absence due to ill health. He was rekindling his friendships with the people that he had lost contact with. He was always watching the horses play and had a great memory for a horse. He was always checking the sales and buying horses to place with players that he thought would suit them. He and his wife, Judy, started up Terry Smith Horse Transport and was often seen travelling up and down the highways and byways of Australia. At the time of his death he was working at Sydney Polo Country Club doing 2 of the things he loved most in life. Working with horses and with his son Jack. Our thoughts go out to Jack, Angus, Alice and Judy at this sad time. Please add any thoughts that you would like forwarded to the family.
